Ayurveda

A simple guide to the ancient science of life.

The Science of Life

Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural healing that began in India more than 5,000 years ago. The word Ayurveda comes from two Sanskrit words: “Ayur” meaning life, and “Veda” meaning knowledge or science. So, Ayurveda literally means “the science of life.”

But it’s not just about treating sickness — it’s about understanding life, health, balance, and our deep connection to nature and the universe. It teaches that everything in life — your body, your thoughts, the seasons, the food you eat — are all deeply connected.

The Five Elements

Ayurveda is based on the idea that everything in the universe — including you — is made up of five elements. These elements combine in different ways to form the three doshas.

Earth

Water

Fire

Air

Ether (Space)

The Three Doshas: Energies of Life

Each person has their own unique mix of three doshas, called their prakriti (natural constitution). Health, in Ayurveda, means keeping your doshas in balance according to your nature, the seasons, your age, and your environment.

Vata

(Air + Ether)

This dosha governs movement, including breathing, circulation, and thought. Vata types are often energetic and creative, but imbalance can cause anxiety and restlessness.

Pitta

(Fire + Water)

Pitta controls digestion, metabolism, and energy. Pitta types are usually focused and driven, but imbalance can lead to anger or burnout.

Kapha

(Earth + Water)

Kapha is responsible for structure and stability. Kapha types are typically calm and caring, but imbalance can cause sluggishness or heaviness.

Healing Through Balance

Ayurveda uses food, herbs, daily routines, yoga, meditation, and lifestyle practices to restore balance. It doesn’t treat just the symptom — it looks at the root cause, seeing illness as an imbalance in the whole system.

Living in Harmony

Connect with Nature

Ayurveda reminds us we are not separate from the earth. The food we eat and air we breathe impact our health.

Listen to Your Body

When we live out of sync, our body lets us know. Ayurveda invites us to slow down and listen.

Heal Through Connection

Healing comes from connection — to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us.

Thrive in Rhythm

When we live in rhythm with the world, our body, mind, and spirit can truly thrive.
